SLC SWKIF Winter Seminar & Shinsa 2026
SWKIF Regional Iaido Seminar in SLC
This event will run Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Training will be held at the First Baptist Church located at 777 S 1300 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84102. Parking access is off of 800 South. Parking lot is at the South East corner of the church. The gym is the building at the rear of the church. If additional parking is needed, proceed uphill on 800 S for the upper lot.
Friday will begin drill warm-ups and a review of critical seitei fundamentals from 6pm – 8pm. Doors open at 5:30pm. Dressing areas are available. The lower bathrooms are under some minor construction but are usable. Upper bathrooms are available but more limited in space. Feel free to arrive dressed.
The Friday evening’s session will be followed by an optional casual “second dojo” for food & drink at Rio Grande Cafe 258 S 1300 E Salt Lake City. This location is near the dojo. Carpooling is encouraged as parking may be limited. Additional parking is available in the Key Bank parking lot.
Saturday morning begins at 9am (doors open at 8:30am). This morning will conclude basics and begin a split group focus to allow more specific work depending on the skill levels of the attendees. Training will conclude at 5pm. A seminar dinner will be held at Miyazaki beginning at 6:30pm. This is a private room with a 25 guest capacity. Overflow may sit at the bar in the main restaurant or await other seating.
Sunday, doors will open at 08:00 am for participants. Katas will be posted by 08:15am. The shinsa will begin at 9am.
Special Note for SHINSA takers: Final comments of encouragement for shinsa takers will be at the close of the seminar on Saturday. The morning of the exam, Sensei-Gata will make their way into the building and take up a location away from those warming up. Please do not engage the examiners with questions or needs. Some non-examiner Sensei & assistants will be available to guide/assist shinsa takers. Also, if you attend the Saturday dinner, please do not disclose or discuss with Sensei-gata if you are/aren’t taking Shinsa the next day. Shinsa takers should refrain from any gift giving ahead of shinsa results posting.
Saturday Lunch
Saturday, lunch will occur around noon and will last 1 hour. A cafeteria area for eating is available just steps away from the dojo floor. Participants may bring their or meal or take advantage of a lunch order that will be taken via sign up. The lunch meal order will be put together ahead of time for delivery to the gym. Attendees are encouraged to watch their email for a lunch survey as the seminar nears. Again, you may of course chose to bring your own food to enjoy in the dinning hall instead. Some food options are available nearby but may be difficult for a 1 hour lunch.
Saturday Dinner
Miyazaki Japanese Restaurant
An optional dinner is for Saturday following conclusion of the seminar. The planned location is Miyazaki Japanese Restaurant. Address: 6223 S State Street #4, Murray, UT 84107. Time is 6:30PM. We have scheduled a private room that will accommodate up to 25 guest. Because seating may be limited, we ask that locals who wish to invite family members check with event coordinators after class on February 2nd when we should have a rough idea of local attendee levels. Additional reservations may be necessary if the dinner attendance exceeds 25.

Event T-Shirts. Made from Soft Gilden Brand T-shirts. These shirts are an additional way to support Zen Bu Kan and the seminar. A LIMITED number of t-shirts have been pre-ordered and will be on hand for $20 due to be paid at the time of pick-up. Pick up will be on Saturday morning of the seminar. A wider selection of T-shirts are available online in our store. You’ll find a wide variety of colors and sizes to meet your preferences.
